Bishops beat EMC in U16 basketball final

Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat School beat Earl Mortimer College 36 - 27 in the U16 basketball final held at Whitecross on Friday.

In a low scoring first period, Bishops looked to work the ball to Burke and Ridley close to the basket with Earl Mortimer restricted to longer range shots from Benson and Barnett. Fortunes changed in the second quarter with Mortimer outscoring their city counterparts 8 poits to 4. Barnet continued to score from range and defending well to deny Bishops space and time. At the half, the teams were level 14 - 14.

In the second half, Bishops picked up the pace with Hodgeson pulling the strings and looking to put players in under the basket. Bishops started to assert themselves under the basket winning rebounds and recycling possession well. The game was evenly balanced until the final quarter when Bishops put in 8 points burst without reply. Mortimer went to a man - to - man defence denying Bishops time and space and slowly starting to score on the break. The early points in the quarter proved decisive and Bishops moved to extend their lad to 9 points at the final whistle.

The game was officiated by Steve Farmer, Club Director of Hereford Mavericks( ), and members of the Mavericks basketball team.
